Going Away Outfits-Have They Gone Away?

This week I had the opportunity to meet with a really great couple and help them along with their wedding plans.
I was over the hill excited when the Bride had mentioned to me that she was looking for her "Going Away outfit".

Not since the 70's has this tradition been a regular feature in weddings. (I still love the picture of my parents in their going away digs-my Mom in a sage green wraparound dress, and my Dad in a baby blue suit with hawaiin style shirt-yup it was the 70's!)
The main reason most couples did this was because they usually left right from the wedding reception to head off to their honeymoon.

While in more recent years, most brides choose to stay in their gown for as long as possible (and let's face it-you've paid all that money for it, when are you ever going to get another chance to wear it again?) it's refreshing to see the bride more comfortable at the end of the evening.
Here are some other great reasons you might want to think of changing into a "Going Away outfit"
  • It's more comfortable to dance
  • Less worry about getting your dress stomped on, torn, or someone's red wine spilled on it.
  • Bathroom issue solved ;)
  • Sweating issue solved ;) (think of all that material you'll be carrying around for at least several hours!)
  • Gives your guests on more thing to look forward to
  • Easier for your Groom to carry you over the threshold
  • Do you honestly think your Groom can handle helping you out of that corset/button style backing at the end of the evening? (Your bridesmaids won't be there ;)
While I don't really think the "Going away outfit" ever really went away-I am really happy to see that some brides nowadays are still opting to change before they leave their receptions!

What are your thoughts on the "Going away outfit"? Would you wear your dress the entire time, or opt to be comfy yet stylish on your way out?

I'd love to read your comments!
Have a fantastic day,
